BEHIND MY FACE [PROJECT AND FILM]

This is an extensive collection of self-portraits which I continue to make 365 days a year. The project has been ongoing since 1999. It always employs approximately the same technique and always has the date on the picture. These daily pictures are interrupted by what I call 'blackouts' or 'black days': days which I prefer not to be reminded of, or whose circumstances I wish to remain in the dark.

I initially conceived this in 1997 as a loose series. I photographed myself handheld, but without the date and not daily. Towards the end of 1998 the idea took on a more concrete nature. The idea is simple: like others, I forget feelings and events quickly. In my early days I kept a diary to ensure I could recreate certain moments in my mind. Nowadays, instead of writing, I photograph my diary. In this way I can partly remember where I was when, and how I felt there.

These moments, which are very important for me, are retained through the photographs of my changing appearance and context, and become framed in time whilst also representing time's passage. In this effort to understand my own character I create a bigger picture of myself and raise further questions about the nature, and relationship, of change and identity. Publishing this work allows me to share these questions with a larger audience.

DIANA SCHEUNEMANN [BOOK]

‘Diana's work actually requires few words. Even the most cursory of glances through this incredible collection gives the viewer the most intimate insight into her electric, scary, sexy, witty, hilarious otherworldly existence. Whether catching a glimpse of a solitary midnight swim, a moment of intense climax, or a naked masked ghoul on the back seat of the family saloon Diana's subjects are the anti-heros of our bland coffee table culture. Every page crackles with a raw energy and a visual dexterity, leads you helplessly onwards through this fantastical exhibition of sex, nightmares, life, death, rock n'roll and everything along the way. Most importantly there is always a punchline and always a reason to celebrate being alive.

This new book; truly shocking, memorable and inspiring from start to finish is a moving and decisive exploration of all aspects of the human condition, a real test of the last few boundaries of public taste and decency, and a damn good ride. Fundamentally these images are about life and all it can possibly throw at you, there is no other story worth telling and few other photographers I would rather hear it from… enjoy!’

LOVE AMERICAN SKIN [BOOK AND FILM]

American skin covers a nation. The people, the landscape: a surface upon which our eyes play curious, lustful, tragic, and loving. A body of so many histories and so many origins covered by a single American skin. Peeling back the surface exposes the miniature stories of individual cells in the corpus, and the collective story of a country’s complexion.

One summer Diana Scheunemann undertook an eight week road trip clockwise around the USA, starting and ending in New York City. The aim of the trip was to photograph, film and explore the multiple facets of the American identity. The people that she met en route have become part of the project "Love American Skin", presented in this book, online at loveamericanskin.com and in the accompanying feature-length documentary.

Armed with her camera and curiosity, Diana Scheunemann uncovered a true passion, diversity and inspiring honesty across the landscape of America. The citizens she interviewed never lacked in confidence, exposing their true emotions, past traumas or future endeavours. The project presents some of the brief biographies and tales of the characters whom she met wherever she traveled across America.

When asked about her motivation behind the project she explains:

"I was curious. New York City, Los Angeles or Miami, do not represent this country as a whole. I have heard so many stories: the people in the mountains dislike the people from the city; the North looks down on the South and all of them are wary of the people and places they don’t know. So my boyfriend PJ Norman, our dog Nico and I set off for one summer in a car to find out for ourselves. The USA is so large, with so many dimensions. We drove 10,128 miles, through 21 states, and experienced temperatures between 35 and 118 degrees fahrenheit (2 and 48 degrees celsius). Halfway into the trip my boyfriend became my husband. Over 60 days we filmed and photographed the people we encountered. Everyone we met on this journey was enriching and welcoming. They let us into their homes and hearts. They took the time to show us their lives. They were so interesting to listen to, if only sometimes for the briefest of moments."

Diana Scheunemann and PJ Norman became more united than ever whilst experiencing the trials offered by life on the road, such as sleeping in parking lots and deserts, and cooking food in the car’s engine. The emotional challenges of the stories they encountered along the way affected them deeply and culminated dramatically with their wedding in the desert of Nevada. Both the photography and the film replicate this journey’s spontaneity, freedom, eccentricity and discoveries; and stand as an emblematic ensemble of breathtaking landscapes and stories, people and situations.

The film elucidates the situations further, the backstage, the life on the journey and the couple’s relationship, including PJ’s vows, their love and their arguments. All the different obstacles, the interactions with the people they encountered, and the situations they lived together create a fascinating mosaic of what this country is. “Love American Skin” is a deep portrait of the opposing viewpoints that feed the beating heart of this experiment in progress called America.

‘Two cars bursting with cameras, crew and clothing. Diana Scheunemann conceived this road trip as a photography project, but it quickly evolved into something more. A representation of the virtues of youth: the search for independence; the natural content of the beautiful; the mischievousness of the young. The laughter was reflected in the immaculate summer weather, every pose and gesture supplemented the feeling of fun and sunshine.

Erotic or hilarious, sexy or plain absurd; the atmosphere soon began to work its way into the shots which encapsulated a perfect feeling of youth. The experience blurred the line between fantasy and reality, where each photograph became a window into the immortal world of Neverland and the wonderful mind of Diana Scheunemann.’

AMBISEXUAL [BOOK]

‘Diana Scheunemann's photography has captured my imagination in a way that is both creatively inspiring and intellectually thought-provoking. Her particular brand of erotic imagery is so glaringly ambiguous that for me, it raises as many questions as it answers. Her work is neither homoerotic nor traditionally pornographic and she succeeds in presenting her subjects both honestly and artistically, whilst managing to avoid all the conventions of gender bias that are typically found in erotic photography. As a photographer who deals in visual currency on a daily basis, I have been provided with the impetus to look at things in a different way and with a more truthful agenda, all of this as a result of looking closely at Diana's work. For me that is really saying something...’
